Windsorten Diamond

The Windsorten weighed a 140 ct when it was found by J.J. Steyn who was somewhat of a veteran diamond digger for 33 years before he found this rock at Windsorten Breakwater on the Vaal River in South Africa way back in 1961 (which also happens to be the year that the Republic of South Africa was established). Steyn sold the Windsorten to a Johannesburg-based diamond cutter for around $27,000.

The discovery of diamonds at Klipdrift on the Vaal River in 1869 drew thousands of prospectors. The area was renamed Barkly West in 1873 after becoming part of the Crown Colony of Griqualand West. Renowned writer Sarah Gertrude Millin grew up in the district. Her father opened and operated a shop in Barkly West. One of the first towns to be affected by the diamond rush, today  the district’s economy is driven by stock and irrigation farming and mining.

Regrettably, this is where the story ends.
